1st World Heritage Cuisine Summit and Food Festival Begins in Punjab

  • World Heritage Cuisine Summit & Food Festival 2018 has been orgainsed from 12th to 14th October 2018 at Qila Gobindgarh located in the center of Amritsar city in Punjab.
  • The first edition of the festival brings together chefs from nearly 40 countries and 20 different states of India.
  • The event is being hosted by Indian Federation of Culinary Associations President and ace chef Manjit Singh Gill

Delhi, Moscow Sign Twin City Agreements

  • The Delhi government has signed a twin city agreement with Moscow administration for cooperation in various sectors including education, tourism, transport and environment.
  • The agreement for working together has been signed for a period of three years with effect from November 1.

First India-Israel Innovation Centre Unveils in Bengaluru

  • The first ever India-Israel Innovation Centre (IIIC) in India has been launched in Bengaluru.
  • The entrepreneurial technology hub, IIIC is a significant step towards facilitating penetration of Israeli companies in India and aims to forge local partnerships and joint ventures between companies from the two countries.

SBI Signs MoU with NBI, Nepal for Human Resource Development

  • The State Bank of India has signed 3 years long MoU with Kathmandu-based National Banking Institute (NBI) for the development of human resources of Nepal. 
  • Under the MoU, the strategic training unit of SBI will establish a mutually beneficial strategic alliance for development of NBI’s human resources by imparting education, training and research to facilitate transformation of NBI’s HR department.

Sikkim Wins Gold at Global Future Policy Awards for Organic Farming

  • Sikkim has been awarded the prestigious gold prize at global Future Policy Awards for promoting agro-ecology through policies and laws that have made it a “100 percent organic farming” state. It beat 51 nominated policies from 25 countries.
  • The award is co-organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the World Future Council (WFC) and IFOAM Organics International. 
  • Gold Prize winner Sikkim is the first organic state in the world. It was declared fully organic in 2016 after phasing out chemical fertilisers and pesticides and substituting them with sustainable alternatives.
  • Policies from Brazil, Denmark and Quito (Ecuador) were awarded silver.
  • The winners of Future Policy Award 2018 will be celebrated in a ceremony on October 15 at FAO headquarters during the World Food Week in Rome.

Maryse Conde Wins Alternative Award to Nobel Literature Prize

  • The New Academy Prize in Literature has been created in reaction to this year’s absent Nobel Prize for Literature, hit by a #MeToo-related scandal.
  • The global literary award was given to Guadeloupe based author Maryse Conde for her work on post-colonialism.
  • The New Academy is a provisional self-organized group of over 100 volunteers that emerged to provide an alternative global literature prize this year, after the Swedish Academy decided it would postpone its 2018 award.
  • The Swedish Academy, responsible for selecting the laureate for the Nobel Prize in Literature, meanwhile would announce two Nobel Literature Prize laureates next year — one for 2018 and another for 2019.

Japan To Host 2019 IAAF World Relays

  • The 2019 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Relays is scheduled to take place at Yokohama city in Japan from May 11-12, 2019.
  • This will be the fourth edition of the event. The first three editions of the IAAF World Relays, in 2014, 2015 and 2017, were held in the Bahamian capital.
  • Japan is also preparing to host the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

World Sight Day: October 11, 2018

  • World Sight Day, observed annually on the second Thursday of October to draw attention on blindness and vision impairment.
  • It was originally initiated by the SightFirstCampaign of Lions Club International Foundation in 2000.
  • The theme for 2018 World Sight Day is Eye Care Everywhere

World Arthritis Day: 12 October

  • The World Arthritis Day 2018 is observed every year on October 12 to raise awareness about arthritis, an inflammatory condition which causes pain and stiffness in joints which can worsen with age.
  • This day was started by World Arthritis Foundation in order to spread awareness about arthritis and encourage policymakers to help reduce burden of arthritis. 
  • The theme of World Arthritis Day 2018 is “It’s in your hands, take action.”

World Egg Day: October 12, 2018

  • World Egg Day is celebrated around the world on the second Friday in the month of October each year.
  • The Day was established at the IEC Vienna 1996 conference and helps to raise awareness of the benefits of eggs and their importance in human nutrition.
  • The theme for 2018 World Egg Day is “Protein for Life”
