National Youth Parliament Festival 2019 Launched by Rajyavardhan Rathore

  • The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Col Rajyavardhan Rathore launched the National Youth Parliament Festival 2019 in New Delhi on January 12, coinciding with the National Youth Day.
  • National Youth Parliament Festival 2019 is organised on the theme of “Be The Voice of New India” and “Find solutions and contribute to policy”.
  • It will continue up to 24 February 2019.
  • The aim of the festival is to provide an opportunity to the youth between the age group of 18 to 25 to engage with public issues, discuss about how to make a New India and find ways and plans to realize those resolves.
  • The festival will be held at District, State and National level to select the best speakers, while the best three speakers at the National Youth Parliament will be awarded.

Sikkim CM launches ‘One Family, One Job’ scheme

  • Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling has launched the ‘One Family One Job’ scheme which entitles one government job for every family in the state.
  • At a “Rojgar Mela” (employment fair) organised at the Paljor stadium in Gangtok, over 11,772 unemployed youths were handed out appointment letters on January 12,2019.
  • Sikkim has become the first state in the country to carry out such an exclusive programme for the people who would now be entitled to state government employee benifits.
  • Appointments were given for 26 different posts, including chowkidar (guard), maali (gardener), ward attendents in hospitals and other health facilities, village police guards and assistant village librarians.

Andhra CM Lays Foundation for Iconic ‘Kuchipudi’ Bridge Over Krishna River

  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation for the construction of Iconic Kuchipudi Bridge over river Krishna.
  • The 3.2 km long bridge, to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1387 crore, will connect the capital city Amaravati with Vijayawada-Hyderabad national highway.
  • There will be six lanes on the bridge and 2.5 meters wide pavements on both sides for pedestrians.
  • Chandrababu also laid the foundation for a water treatment plant on Krishna River with an estimated expenditure cost of Rs 745.65 crores

IDFC Bank formally re-named IDFC First Bank Ltd.

  • IDFC Bank has announced that its name has been changed to IDFC First Bank Ltd. w.e.f January 12, 2019.
  • IDFC Bank and non-banking financial company Capital First had announced completion of their merger on December 18, creating a combined loan asset book of Rs 1.03 lakh crore for the merged entity.
  • V Vaidyanathan is the MD and CEO of IDFC First Bank Ltd.

Brahm Dutt named Yes Bank’s non-executive part-time chairman

  • Yes Bank has appointed Brahm Dutt as its non-executive part-time Chairman till July 4, 2020.
  • According to the company, Dutt has been on the Board of Yes Bank since July 2013 as an ‘Independent Director’, and has contributed to almost all the sub-committees of the Board during this period

Ashok Chawla resigns as chairman of NSE over Aircel-Maxis charges

  • Ashok Chawla has resigned as the chairman of the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd (NSE) on January 11, 2019.
  • Chawla’s resignation came on a day the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has obtained the sanction of the ministries concerned to file charges against him and four other former bureaucrats in the Aircel-Maxis case.
  • According to PTI, Ashok Jha, former economic affairs secretary, Kumar Sanjay Krishna, a former joint secretary in the finance ministry, Dipak Kumar Singh, former director in the finance ministry and Ram Sharan, former under secretary in the finance ministry are the other four involved in the case. 

President confers honorary rank of General of Indian Army on Nepal Army Chief

  • President Ram Nath Kovind on January 12, 2019 conferred the honorary rank of General of the Indian Army to General Purna Chandra Thapa, the Army Chief of Nepal. 
  • He was honored for his commendable military prowess and immeasurable contribution to fostering Nepal’s long and friendly association with India.

Amit Chaudhuri releases poetry collection – “Sweet Shop”

  • Noted novelist, essayist, poet and musician Amit Chaudhuri has released his new poetry collection “Sweet Shop”.
  • It is a collection of 31 poems.

National Youth Day Observed on Jan 12

  • National Youth Day is celebrated on every year on 12 January to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
  • The day was declared by the Government of India in 1984 while the event was first celebrated in 1985.

Banker-turned-politician Meera Sanyal passed away

  • Banker-turned-politician Meera Sanyal passed away after a brief illness.
  • Sanyal, 57, had joined the Aam Aadmi Party after quitting her job as the country chief executive of Royal Bank of Scotland, and contested the Lok Sabha election in 2014.
