Government to celebrate July 1, 2018, as ‘GST Day’

  • The government will celebrate July 1, 2018, as ‘GST Day’ to mark the first anniversary of the new indirect tax regime. 
  • Union Minister for Railways, Coal, Finance & Corporate Affairs Piyush Goyal will preside over as the Chief Guest of the event and Minister of State for Finance, Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla will be the Guest of Honour.

Virtual ID system in operation; banks to deploy Aadhaar verification tool by Aug 31: UIDAI

  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) said that its Virtual ID, VID, system is now operational with its Authentication User Agencies (AUA) which have migrated to VID and UID token.
  • Telecom Companies and E-sign provider AUAs not using Application programming interface (API) 2.5 and e-KYC API 2.5 beyond June 30 shall be charged Rs 0.20 for every transaction.
  • If an AUA has fully migrated to API 2.5 by July 31, then authentication transaction charges for July 1-31 shall be waived off. Banks would have time until August 31 to deploy the new feature.
  • About VID- The Virtual ID (VID), which is a random 16-digit number mapped to a person’s Aadhaar number, together with biometrics of the user, would give any authorised agency such as a bank or a mobile company only limited details such as name, address and photograph, which are enough for any verification. 
  • UID Tokens are of 72 character and alphanumeric in nature. 
  • AUAs are of two types- Global AUA and Local AUA.

ICICI Bank appoints GC Chaturvedi as Chairman

  • ICICI Bank appointed former IAS officer GC Chaturvedi as an independent director. He has been appointed for the post of non-executive part-time Chairman.

Mumbai’s Victorian Gothic, Art Deco cluster gets UNESCO World Heritage tag

  • Building clusters of Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles architectural styles in Mumbai was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. 
  • With this UNESCO tag, the count of World Heritage Sites in the country has now risen to 37, of which 29 are cultural, seven natural and one mixed site.
  • This makes Mumbai city the second city in India after Ahmedabad to be inscribed on the World Heritage List.

K Chandrasekhar Rao lays foundation stone for Gattu irrigation project

  • Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao laid the foundation stone for Gattu irrigation project in Jogulamba-Gadwal district, which would irrigate 33,000 acres.
  • The project  is estimated to cost Rs 553.98 crore. 

B Sriram takes charge as MD and CEO of IDBI Bank

  • B Sriram today assumed charge as Managing Director and CEO of IDBI Bank.
  • Sriram was appointed MD and CEO in place of Mahesh Kumar Jain who recently took charge as deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
  • Sriram has been working as the MD (Corporate and Global Banking) in SBI since July 2014. He has now resigned from SBI.

India wins the GRR most improved jurisdiction Award 2018

  • India has won Global Restructuring Review’s “most improved jurisdiction” award. 
  • The honour recognises the jurisdiction which improved its restructuring and insolvency regime the most over the last year. 
  • Global Restructuring Review (GRR) is an online daily news service and magazine on cross-border restructuring and insolvency law.

PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline extended till March 2019: CBDT

  • CBDT has extended the deadline for the PAN-Aadhaar linking to March 31,2019. 
  • This is the fifth time the government has extended the deadline for individuals to link their Permanent Account Number (PAN) to their biometric ID (Aadhaar). 
  • The policy-making body of the tax department issued an order, under Section 119 of the Income Tax Act, late night, extending the deadline.

  • 30 June 2018- International Day of Parliamentarism
  • For the first time, 30 June this year is celebrated as the International Day of Parliamentarism. It is also the date, in 1889, on which the Inter-Parliamentary Union — the global organization of parliaments — was established.
