PM Modi Lays Foundation Stone of National Highway Project at Jalpaiguri in West Bengal

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi visited West Bengal on February 8, 2019 and laid the foundation stone for the four laning of the Falakata – Salsalabari section of NH -31 D in the Jalpaiguri district of the state.
  • The National Highway section is 41.7 km long with an expenditure of around Rs 1,938 crore.
  • It is expected to reduce the distance from Salsalabari and Alipurduar to Siliguri by nearly 50 km.
  • PM also inaugurated Circuit Bench of Calcutta High Court at Jalpaiguri.
  • The New High Court Bench will serve the people of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar in North Bengal for speedy justice who will now have to travel less than 100 km to access the bench instead of 600 km trip to Calcutta High Court.

Nitin Gadkari Lays Foundation Stone for 5 NH Projects Worth Rs. 7195 Crore in Ayodhya

  • Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari was in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh on February 8, 2019.
  • He laid the foundation for Rs 7195 crore five National Highways projects, having total length of 632 km.
  • These projects include:
    1. Beautification of the Ayodhya section of the Lucknow-Ayodhya highway
    2. 4 laning of the Ayodhya-Akbarpur section of the Ayodhya-Varanasi highway
    3. Construction of the 46 km, 4 lane Ayodhya Ring Road
    4. Construction of the 44 km Mohanganj-Shringverpur section of the Ram Vangaman Marg
    5. Construction of the 91 km Bikapur-Rudauli-Murtihanghat  section of Ayodhya’s 84 Kosi Parikrama Marg

‘Parmanu Tech 2019’ Conference held in New Delhi

  • The ‘Parmanu Tech 2019’ conference organised by the Ministry of External Affairs and Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) was held in New Delhi on February 06, 2019.
  • The conference discussed issues related to Nuclear Energy and Radiation Technologies.

Chennai Police launches mobile app DIGI COP for stolen two-wheeler and mobiles

  • Actor Vijay Sethupathi launched the mobile App ‘DigiCop’ of Chennai Police. The app will enable the user to track the status of stolen two-wheelers and cell phones.
  • The app, DIGI COP  can tell a buyer if the mobile phone they have purchased second hand is a stolen mobile or not. The user can also lodge mobile theft complaints using the app.
  • The user can also know if their stolen two-wheeler had been traced by the police. Using DigiCop App, people can verify IMEI, report lost two-wheelers and phones, know the nearest police station, police news and traffic alerts.

Madhya Pradesh Govt announces ‘Indira Grah Jyoti Yojana’ and ‘Yuva Swabhiman Yojana’

  • Madhya Pradesh Government has announced two schemes:  ‘Indira Grah Jyoti Yojana’ and ‘Yuva Swabhiman Yojana’ (This was annouced earlier but more detail is available about the scheme now).
  • Indira Grah Jyoti Yojana– Under this scheme 100 units of power would be provided to all households at Rs 100. If they consume more than 100 units in a month, they will have to pay for the entire consumption at the existing rate. It will cost the government about Rs 2,226 crore.
  • Yuva Swabhiman YojanaUnder the scheme unemployed urban youths will get a hundred days’ employment and a stipend of Rs 13,000. 
    • Eligibility – Age- 21 to 30; and annual family income of less than Rs 2 lakh. 
    • This scheme will cost the government about Rs 800 crore.

Assam Announces Arundhati Gold Scheme to Give 1 Tola (10 Gm) Gold to EWS Brides

  • The state government of Assam has announced the ‘Arundhati’ scheme to give one ‘tola’ (10 grams) of gold to brides from communities where it is customary to provide gold at the time of the wedding.
  • The cost of the above mentioned gold is around Rs 38,000 (as on date).
  • The state has earmarked Rs 300 crore for the scheme and it will be limited to economically weaker sections, whose annual income is below Rs 5 lakh.
  • Besides, the benefit of the scheme will be available only for the first two live offspring of a family and only in cases where the bride and the groom have both attained the legal age of 18 years and 21 years respectively.In addition, the benefit under this scheme can be availed upon formal registration of the marriage under the Special Marriage (Assam) Rules, 1954.

India to host 13th Conference of Parties(COP) of the Convention on the conservation of migratory species of wild animals(CMS)

  • The 13th Conference of Parties (COP) of the Convention on the conservation of migratory species of wild animals (CMS) will be hosted by India from 15 to 22 February, 2020 at Gandhinagar in Gujarat.
  • The Union Environment Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, inaugurated the Logo and Mascot (GIBI) along with website for the international event, in New Delhi on February 8, 2019.
  • The COP on conservation of migratory species of wild animals (CMS) is an environmental treaty under the aegis of United Nations Environment Programme to conserve terrestrial, marine and avian migratory species throughout their range. 

India Organised ILO Centenary Celebrations at Noida

  • Union Minister of State (I/C) for Labour and Employment Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar inaugurated the International Labour Organization (ILO) centenary celebrations in India at V.V. Giri National Labour Institute, Noida on February 8, 2019.
  • ILO is a unique agency of the United Nations Organization (UNO) that sets international labour standards and promotes social protection and work opportunities for all.
  • It is tripartite in nature and works on the principal of collaboration among government, employers and workers.
  • The organisation was formed on 29 October 1919. India is one of the founding member of the organisation.
  • In 2019, the International Labour Organization celebrates its 100th anniversary. 
  • The ILO has 187 member states comprising 186 of the 193 UN member states plus the Cook Islands

Macedonia Signs Accord to Join NATO as 30th Member

  • The 29 member NATO states have signed an agreement with Macedonia, allowing the Balkan nation to become the military alliance’s 30th member.
  • Each NATO member will now need to ratify the accession protocol for the formal membership of Macedonia in the US-led alliance.
  • The move followed a deal between Macedonia and NATO-member Greece under which Macedonia agreed to change its name to the Republic of North Macedonia.
  • The pact was signed between Macedonian Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov in Brussels on February 6 with NATO representative states.

Vidharbha Beat Saurashtra to Lift Second Successive Ranji Trophy

  • Vidharbha lifted the Ranji Trophy for the second time in a row, defeating Saurashtra by 78 runs in the finals at Nagpur on February 7, 2019. 
  • The 2018–19 Ranji Trophy was the 85th season of the Ranji Trophy held between November 2018 and February 2019.
  • Vidarbha is the only sixth team in the tournament’s history to win the tournament title
